Balancing Online Business and Family |
|
More and more people are looking at ways to start their own business. With the increasing popularity of the Internet and the fact that it can quickly and easily reach a global audience, the growth of online businesses in booming.
In fact, many small business owners have successfully managed to create businesses that are based entirely online.
One of the most common issues that small business owners face when starting an online business is finding a way to juggle their family needs along with their business needs. By following these simple tips, you can continue to build a strong online presence while also enjoying quality time with the ones you love.
Discuss Your New Business Plan with Your Family
Before you even get started with your online business, be sure to sit down and discuss your plans with your family. It is better for your family to discuss its concerns before you have actually started the business. This way, you can come up with ways to deal with potential issues now rather than while you are under the extra stress of trying to start a business.
Including your family in a discussion about your new business will also help them feel more involved in the process. By asking them for their feedback and suggestions, they will gain ownership of the business as well and will be more likely to do their part in order to make it a success.
Prepare Your Family for the Trials of Starting a New Business
For many entrepreneurs, finances become a bit tight when starting a new business. As you invest your time and revenue into the business, your family may not have quite as much money for the extras it has become accustomed to. Discuss this issue with your family so they are prepared for a tightened budget.
In order to prevent your family from feeling like it is doing nothing but making sacrifices for your business, build in a rewards system. For example, after you complete certain business goals, take your family out to eat or reward them in some other agreed upon method. This way, your family will not feel completely deprived and they will also be more supportive of your business. After all, if your business succeeds, they get to enjoy a great reward.
Create a Schedule and Stick to It
One of the biggest problems business owners encounter is the inability to stick to a schedule. It is easy to decide to run a certain errand or to take a break with the understanding that you will “get to it later.” Unfortunately, many business owners fall into a trap of planning to get to it later, but later never comes.
When you have a family, falling into this trap becomes even easier to do. As family demands, such as going to doctor’s appointments and sporting events start to interfere with your work time. In addition, your spouse or even other friends and family members may think of you as someone that is available to run errands during the day because you work out of your home.
Before you start your online business, make your schedule clear to your family and friends. The time that you have allotted is to be your work time and should be respected in the same manner, as your position would be if you still worked for someone else.
Build in Family Time
Just as it is essential for you to build in time that is meant for your business, you also need to build in time for your family. Just as your work time is solely for your business and is not to be infringed upon by running family errands, your family time is not to be interrupted by business. This means leaving the laptop at home when you go on vacations.
If your family time is continually interrupted by your business, your family will begin to resent your business and you will lose the support that you so desperately need. Similarly, if you fail to make time for your family, your relationships will almost certainly begin to suffer. Obviously, your family is the most important thing in your life so you do not want to inadvertently hurt those you care about.
Honor Privacy
Since your goal will be to create a strong presence on the Internet, be sure to continue to honor the privacy of your family members. Remember, if you post information or pictures about your family or friends on your web site, the entire world will be able to see it. Be sure to clear this with your family members before you discuss their personal issues, post pictures, or address them by name on the Internet. Nothing can create a rift faster than sharing information that someone doesn’t want to be shared.
Starting an online business is an exciting time of a person’s life. After all, nearly everyone has a dream of being his or her own boss – and the Internet create an excellent opportunity for making this happen. If you have a family as well, however, you need to make sure take the steps necessary to keep your family strong as you build the strength of your business.
