Anyone who is reading about the world of e-commerce these days realizes that it offers opportunities for the small businessperson beyond anything that's been available previously. The costs are minimal to start up, the market is worldwide and the information pool is mind-bending. If you've considered joining the e-commerce trend, this is an excellent time to do so. You may wonder about what the best online businesses are. There probably is no single right answer, but if you keep the following principles in mind, you are sure to find an online business that will work for you.

THE BEST ONLINE BUSINESS HAS A REAL PRODUCT
If you've already done some looking around the internet and allowed your name to be placed on a mailing list, chances are you're already receiving dozens of offers about business opportunities. It's important to realize that most of these business opportunities are little more than gifting programs, or in some cases, scams. Your customers want a real product, whether it's information or a service or something that you place in a shipping package and send to the customer doesn't matter. It just needs to be real.

THE BEST ONLINE BUSINESS HAS A MARKET
That seems self evident, but too many small businesses go under because the owner assumed a demand that was unrealistic. If you have a product that only appeals to a very few people, such as a mortar and pestle for example, and this is the only product you will carry--it's a legitimate product and there are people who would want one and use it, but probably not enough to warrant the cost of setting up an online business. Granted, putting such an item on the internet is a better way to market it than opening a shop in the nearest shopping mall that sells only the one product.

THE PRODUCT IS USED UP OR WORN OUT
Or, another alternative might be that it is collectible. You want customers to come back again and again--happily--to buy another one of your products. At the same time, you want a product that doesn't wear out sooner than the customer had a right to expect. Obviously you expect clothing and shoes to wear out. Health, beauty and food products get used up and jewelry is collectible. All of these products will keep customers returning to purchase more.

CONSTANT DEMAND
In order to plan ahead and maintain adequate inventory on hand, you must have some idea how many units will be needed on a day-to-day basis. Although some product will have seasonal variations, you can still rely on mittens always being needed in the wintertime. You should plan on a product which is not one of those six week fad items that disappears from view once the craze is over. It can be somewhat problematic to know that a product will be around for a long time, (remember 45 rpm records?} but anyone who would have expended time and energy setting up a website devoted to 'pet rocks' would have been laughed at after a very short time.

LOW SET UP COSTS
Since most online entrepreneurs start small, it's wise to pick a product that doesn't create a negative cash flow for years--even when it's a good idea otherwise. A word about a business plan here--you should have a very clear mental and written picture of what you expect your business to cost and to earn during each month during the first year and yearly growth following that BEFORE you launch the business.

PASSION
The business may succeed in terms of dollars and sense, but if it is not something you personally are passionate about, you won't enjoy your success. If you had wanted to keep doing something you're not happy with, just for the sake of the money, you might just as well have stayed with your desk job. If, on the other hand, you can't wait to get up in the morning to see how your business fared during the previous night, you'll never work another day in your life.

Even though it may be tempting especially during the early months of an exciting new online business you also need to remember to keep the priorities of your life in balance.
