Keeping your business organized is a large part of guaranteeing success for yourself, or at least staving off the chance of failure by giving you more of the necessary tools for running your business smoothly and keeping everything in order at the same time.

A lack of organization in your business can cause a lot of unnecessary stress, which may in turn reduce your productivity by causing you to lose your focus. Consider earning a masters of business administration so that you learn the most effective organizational strategies to ensure the highest amount of productivity from your business.

Organizing your business does not have to be difficult or time consuming by any means, because the true key to business organization lies in developing a plan that you can stick to in order to make it work. Here are ten tips to keep your business organized for success.

1 – Make sure that your home office or work area has enough space for you to effectively operate within it. This also means ensuring that you have enough storage space for inactive projects, enough surface space for electronics and equipment, and enough room to move around and work freely without feeling cramped or cluttered.

2 – If you do not have the luxury of oversized filing cabinets for file storage, you will need to develop your own well-organized filing system in order to get by, so plan on spending some time and effort in this department. Organizing your files in a way that allows you to easily reach them is a key to keeping yourself focused and productive.

3 – Color-coding is a great option for a variety of different facets of your business. Color-code your e-mail, your files, and even your phone call messages, so that you can keep like with like. For example, if all communications with a specific supplier are blue, locating a specific invoice only requires looking at blue files rather than all of the files in your cabinets and drawers. This makes finding e-mail and other notes a snap as well.

4 – While it is a good idea to have office supplies handy whenever you need them, keeping them all over your desk, in drawers, in cabinets and pretty much everywhere else is not productive at all. Store your office supplies correctly and you will actually notice a big improvement on your business organization. Parts storage systemsare a convenient way to keep supplies and small parts secure, organized, and readily accessible.

5 – Files should be clearly labeled, and you should plan on spending a small amount of time each day ensuring that every paper goes into the right file folder, and that every file folder ends up in the right drawer before you leave the office for the day. What may seem like a hassle at first with turn out to be a godsend when your files are exactly where you need them to be the morning of a big important meeting, or when a client calls unexpectedly first thing in the morning.

6 – Figure out a storage system that works, even if it means buying a bunch of stackable cubes, or some kind of desktop storage. One of the biggest keys to business organization has to do with storing everything correctly and being able to access it with ease.

7 – Make sure that the physical layout of your business office is working for you. If your desk is too large and you feel cramped in a small space, try a smaller desk and some kind of additional storage to make up for lost drawers or shelves. If your filing cabinets are simply too bulky for your space, try portable filing boxes that stack well instead.

8 – Consider organization systems that work. If you operate best using alphabetical filing, stick to that. If color-coding is preferable to you, invest in some highlighters or markers and give everything a color. Own your filing system, make it yours, and make sure that it actually makes things easier for you.

9 – Keep your basic supplies handy, but keep them put away. Your most basic office supplies should be close enough that you can get to them any time, but that is no excuse to clutter them all over your desk. Desktop storage solutions are ideal for this very reason, and they typically have a slot or a drawer for just about everything.

10 – The number one key to business organization is this: Your organization plan needs to fit YOU. Find a system that works for your situation, addresses and solves your issues, and puts your most important needs first. When you feel more comfortable and more productive in you’re your own business office, then you can rest assured that your organization solution is actually working as it should.
